Its a hard time for all of us fighting this dreadful Corona Virus(COVID-19). We have learned so much about the virus by now and what are the precautions we should be taking to prevent and overcome this disease. Let me explain you in brief about this virus and what it actually does to your body and what are the things that you can do to prevent it. What is COVID 19  and what it does to the body?? COVID-19 i s an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. It  is more or less like the common flu or common cold which causes respiratory illness like pneumonia. We see its symptoms after 14 days which makes it easier for transmission if we are not careful. Super markets are places which offers a wide variety of items be it food, beverages, clothes etc. Supermarkets have become important part of our life and has actually made our life easier. All thanks to those people who put tremendous effort in bringing all the necessary items to these supermarkets.

Supermarkets in Nagaland have a unique story to tell. These markets came into existence as a need to support the family by women who are mothers,daughters,sisters etc. Yes guys, these supermarkets in Nagaland are mostly run by female. Naga women are strong, brave and hardworking part of the population and they work hard to support the family.These markets in Nagaland are a must visit places for those people who are looking for foods that are purely organic and safe for consumption. The supermarkets in Nagaland are known for their quality of fruits and vegetables they sell. They are grown by the local farmers in their fields and they are free from all the harmful pesticides and fertilizers. You can eat them as much as you like without having to worry about the effects it would have on your health.

When interviewed with the women in one of the super markets, it was heart touching to learn how difficult it is to sit at one place for hours and wait for the buyers to come and purchase items.

I visited three main super markets in Kohima town and I was really fascinated by the variety of vegetables and fruits that were available. I bought a whole lots of fruits and veggies because they looked so eye catching and I couldn't stop myself from buying it.

Lets get to know more about the markets in Kohima, Nagaland.

The Bamboo Market in Kohima is an interesting supermarket in Town made of bamboos.The market provides ample and comfortable place for the female vendors for selling their produce. It provides all the unusual items like the hornet hive, worms, fermented soy beans, fermented bamboo shoots, home made salts etc. It also features variety of local and organic fruits and vegetables. The items sold here are bought from various neighboring villages like Pfsutsero, Meluri, Phek, Zunheboto, Wokha etc. The farmers in these places harvest healthy crops which are brought to Kohima and sold to the people. The women selling these produce earn good profit while sometimes they suffer great loss. 
However, they play a vital role in the society by providing healthy foods to the people.

Oranges
 Oranges are famous fruits during winter. Its aroma is refreshing and its a tasty fruit packed with loads of vitamin C. If you are looking for sweet oranges then you should definitely buy from the Bamboo Market.


Locally grown spring onions
These spring onions are wonderful when cooked right. You can add them in any dish and it will give you amazing flavor. You can also use them for making the hot Khuvie and king chili Chutney which is a famous chutney eaten in every Naga house. These spring onions are strong so they are required in small quantity while cooking. They are also easily available in the Bamboo Market.

Ginger
The local ginger is a very strong flavouring ingredient used in every Naga Cuisine. The ginger can be used for cough and cold. It gives instant relief from any kind of congestion. One must definitely keep this powerful ingredient at home.

Dried King Chilies

The dried king chili can warm you up in winter. King chilies do not have longer shelf life, so for increasing their shelf life they are dried in the sun for few days and stored in tight containers. This way they can be consumed for a longer period of time. The people here in Nagaland buy the dried king chili and store them so that they can use them for cooking irrespective of any season.

The Mao Market
Location: Fire Station Kohima

The Mao Market serves as one of  the oldest super market in Kohima Town providing us with variety of organic vegetables and other food items. This market is also run by the women of the Naga society enabling them to support their family. It is not always easy for them and sometimes leads to great loss however they say that giving up is not a solution and they need to continue their job with a hope that they may at least earn some money for their family by the end of the day.
The food produce are brought from small villages in Nagaland like Melluri, Kiphire, Botsa etc where the farmers grow crops in their own field and sell them to these vendors, that is how we get to eat all the fresh and organic produce in Nagaland.

Mao Market, Kohima

Various food items are sold in the Mao Market which will leave you amazed because they are very unusual and interesting at the same time.

Silk Worm
This silk worm which is found in every part of Nagaland is loved by all the locals because of its high nutritive value and taste. They are quite expensive as well but people love buying and eating them.

Local salt

The local salt is commonly found in every Naga super market. They are safe and healthy for consumption and easy to make at home too.

Snail
These snails are found in the field and they are yum when cleaned and cooked properly. They go very well with meat and seasonal vegetables.


Hornet Hive
The Hornet Hive is what you'll get to see in Nagaland. Inside these strange looking hives lives the Hornet babies which can be eaten. They're nutritious and tasty at the same time.

Bamboo Shoots
The fermented bamboo shoots can be used as a vegetable or it can also be used for flavouring any dishes and cuisines. They have a delicate flavour and so they are fermented before using it. They are easily available in any super markets in Nagaland. They can also be fermented at home and used for cooking.

The Super Market located near the UBC church makes all the local items available to the people at a very reasonable price. They have a variety of items in display starting from fresh vegetable and fruits to all the daos and cutleries. The market is also run by the hardworking mothers who work hard to support their family. Running a shop in such supermarkets is never easy as there is a lot of competition around and it also requires a lot of patience and hard work. However, the high spirit of  the women of Naga society makes this tough job possible and also they earn a good profit which helps them in various ways.

Frogs
Not everyone likes frog, but this is what you'll see in these markets. They are not only good to eat but can be a very useful remedy in curing various diseases. They can be cooked using different methods. And I bet you wont forget its taste once you've eaten and would love to eat more.

Naga Plates
These plates are uniquely made using aluminium metal. You will see these plates in every Naga house. This is where you will see them eating their meal usually.


Eel 
The eel is loved by all the Nagas and they cook in various ways which makes it even tastier and nutritious.

We are able to enjoy fresh organic foods because of their hard work.
